U.K. Fall 1999

Andy Powell - guitar, vocals
Mark Birch - guitar, vocals
Bob Skeat - bass, backing vocals
Ray Weston - drums

The new band get stronger every time I see them. I felt that at the Chicago shows earlier in the year they sounded a lot tighter than they did the previous fall, and now just about 6 months later better they continued to improve. And the changes made to the setlist each tour with this new lineup only make the shows more exciting and interesting. As much as I loved the previous lineup, there just was not enough variety in the set from one tour to the next. This crew however seem to welcome the addition of songs that have not seen the light of day in years. Hurray! More songs than ever from the Laurie Wisefield "Mark II" era!! Now if we can only get some new songs written by the new lineup.

I don't get to take many concert shots anymore, but here are a few views from my lens. First, here's a shot of a place I've always wanted to visit but didn't have the time while over for previous tours.

A fairly famous place. The way it jumps out at you as you approach from the bottom of a hill by car is more impressive than actually walking around it up close. It gives a major thrill just spotting it from the roadway. Wonder how the bird sitting on it feels.

I've been here a before and it is perpetually "under construction". Will they ever complete the new building? To support the cause I "bought" and signed a brick in the old building. See below.

Some of the more prominent bricks already sold. See if you can find the one signed by Wishbone Ash. Here's Ash's brick, signed by Andy Powell. My brick!

First some shots of the events in the afternoon, seeing old friends, question/answer segment, etc.

Detlef Assenmacher and Guy Roberts look for Guy's father Peter inside one of the merchandise boxes. Annual visitors to the conventions Bob Rand and Chris Brennan. Carol and Jan at the merchandise table. Andy Powell brings out the Flying V to keep him company during the question and answer session. A possible guitar clinic is mentioned, but alas it was not to be. The V remained silent until the evening's concert.

This shot during the afternoon session courtesy Detlef Assenmacher. Check out the "hidden" microphones on the dude up front!

Remaining photos from AshCon'99 courtesy Alan Pye, thanks mate!

Andy playing a Steinbrenner, er Steinberger! SMOKIN'!! ! ! ! ! ! ! Ray at the post gig party, fresh from his release from the Betty Ford clinic.

This show also had Ben Granfelt's band opening for Wishbone, and I had to give Ako and Miri a lift to the gig from our hotel. Somehow we actually found it without getting too lost! Although I've been there before, it is a bit tough to find by car. Hmmmm, I just remembered a joke that Miri told me as we were driving around in circles. I guess it's not much of a joke unless you're from Finland, but somehow it worked on me.

Here's the "joke":

Miri: "What do you call a deer with no eyes?"
Me (After thinking for a minute whilst navigating a roundabout, not sure which lane to get in etc): "No idea."
Miri: "Right! Very good..."
Me: "He He...that was dumb but funny I guess. SHIT! I think we should have gone the other way."
Miri: "Don't worry about it, we have faith in you. You'll find it. Listen, what do you call the same deer after he's been run over by a car?"
Me (Realizing we turned into some kind of business park that is a dead end so I am trying to turn the car around and not giving much thought to Miri's riddle): "Still no idea..."
Miri: "Right again!!"

Some photos of various folks hanging out at the Dudley show, courtesy of Alan Pye.

Ben and Ako. Miri, Ben and Ako. Ben is smiling because he just got paid a nice sum from selling so many of his CDs during the tour, not because he thinks Miri's joke above is funny. New York Yankees fans in England? Alan Pye, Detlef Assenmacher, and Gary Thomas. Motley crew eh? Who's that changing film off to the right?
